Morphology / Anatomy Scan

The morphology scan is a detailed ultrasound performed
between 18 - 20 weeks of pregnancy.

During the scan, we:

  • Assess each part of the fetus;
  • Check the position of the placenta;
  • Evaluate the amount of amniotic fluid;
  • Measure fetal growth;

We focus closely on the brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, bowel, kidneys and limbs.

If any abnormalities are detected, the findings will be discussed. The couple will be given the opportunity to have futher counselling

with our specialist doctors.

Moderately Full Bladder:

For the best possible images, it is helpful to have a moderately full bladder. This helps lift the uterus above the pelvic bone. About an hour before your appointment, please empty your bladder and drink two standard glasses of water. Do not go to the toilet again until after your scan. We don’t require your bladder to be uncomfortably full, so please inform our reception staff if you are uncomfortable while waiting.

Family Member:

You are welcome to have your partner/family member join you for the scan. It is important to remember that this is a diagnostic procedure and the sonographer will need to concentrate on the images of your baby.

Baby's Gender:

If you'd like to know the baby's gender, please inform the sonographer.

However, there may be occasions when the sonographer is unable to determine it, typically due to the baby's position.

Keep in mind that gender assessment is not always 100% accurate.

If you prefer not to know the gender, please also inform the sonographer before the ultrasound scan.
